What Is "Hangman?"

"Hangman" is an old schoolkid game where a person (in this case, the computer) picks a word or a phrase, and you try to reconstruct it by picking letters.

You have a certain number of chances to win; each time you pick an incorrect letter, you lose a chance. Loss of a chance is traditionally depicted by adding more body parts to a picture of a hanging man. Once the man is complete, the game is over and you lose. In this hangman game, the pictures are a little less... gruesome.


Game Type:

Currently, there are five game types:
  • There are many "dictionaries" of words and phrases:
    • English Words:
      • Easy Words - Simple english words.
      • Difficult Words - Hard to spell, long, and uncommon english words.
      • Frequent 102 Words - 102 of the most frequently use words.*
      • Ogdon's Basic English Words - The minimum set of words (about 850) which could communicate all ideas.*
      • Clothes - Names of articles of clothing.*
      • Fruit - Names of fruit.*
      • Vegetables - Names of vegetables.*
      • Men's Names - Common men's names.*
      • Women's Names - Common women's names.*
    • English as a Second Language:
      • Japanese 7th Grade English - Words used to teach english in Japan.*
      • Basic Words I - Level I ESL.*
      • Basic Words II - Level II ESl.*
    • Miscellaneous Categories:
      • Star Trek Words And Phrases - Names, words and quotes from the Star TrekTM TV and movie series.
      • Classic Arcade Game Titles - Names like "Pac Man," "Asteroids," and "Missile Command!"
  • And a "Pick Your Own Word" mode, which is great for playing with a friend. (One person picks the word and the other tries to guess it.)

Game Speed:

In "Hangman," you get 6 chances. You can adjust these chances by increasing game speed. The higher the speed, the fewer chances you get.

You can also choose the picture used by Hangman. The current pictures include:

A Growing Seed:

The worse you do, the more the umbrella opens and the less the seed grows.


Happyface Guy:

The worse you do, the less happy he gets!
